Other Roles

Introduction

In addition to being elected to the P.C.C. there are a number of roles which have to be performed to allow the P.C.C. and church to function efficiently, below gives a brief description of the work that each role carries out.

Secretary

The P.C.C. Secretary is the clerk to the P.C.C. it is their responsibility to keep and distribute the minutes of the meetings. To report and send any correspondence that is requested by the P.C.C., in consultation with the chair and others prepare the agenda and other required papers for the meetings.

Usually this person will be elected from within the P.C.C. however in the event that no member is willing to take the role, a Secretary can be appointed, however this person will not enjoy the privilege of voting rights.

Treasurer

The Treasurers role is to oversee the financial dealings of the parish. The are to report to the P.C.C. the current state of the finance, settle any outstanding invoices, and keep accurate records of the accounts. It is the responsibility of the treasurer to advise on all financial matters, and to carry out the instructions of the P.C.C. in relation to any authorised spending.

Electoral Roll Officer

The Electoral Roll officer is responsible for keeping an accurate list of members on the church Electoral Roll. During the year they will keep information about additions and deletions up-to-date, and the at the Annual Meeting, report on the changes. Every six years the roll is deleted and re-created from scratch so that the Roll is maintained efficiently.

Safeguarding Officer

The Safeguarding officer has the responsibility for dealing with any issues. They also ensure that any new P.C.C. members follow all protocols that must be adhered to, and at the time of the APCM ensure that the required annual protocols are carried out.

They will also deal with any issues that arise which have a safeguarding flavour, and ensure that the recognised procedures are followed.

They provide am overview report to the P.C.C. and write a brief report to be added to the APCM report.

Altar Servers

Altar Servers assist in worship by facilitating the flow of the service. Each of our churches is different so responsibilities may include:

  • Carrying the Crucifix / Candles / Thurible
  • Assisting at the reading of the Gospel
  • Receiving the Elements / Collection
  • Assisting in setting the Altar
  • Assisting in cleaning up of the Altar

This list is not exhaustive.

Intercessors

Prayer plays a vital part in our Worship. Leading the prayers allows the clarion voice to gather all of the thoughts and prayers of the church to offer petitions to God.

Readers

This role is not to be confused with Lay Readers. Reading the scripture in church allows people to hear God’s word opened, often in preparation for a sermon to be preached.

Chalice Administrators

During the distribution of Holy Communion, the chalice administrators will bear the cup, and assist the congregation in receiving the sacrament. Appointment to this role is made after the Bishop has agreed to licence the person to carry out this role.

Further Information

It is important to note that training will be required with all of these roles, and anyone who is willing to take on a role will be provided with initial and on-going training and support. Whilst this gives a brief overview of other roles in the church, Fr Ian is very happy to discuss these and other roles more fully, and invites you to contact him to do this.
